Curious?
Here’s an excerpt from Owned:
The episode—more than a month past its scheduled air date—garnered a hundred times more viewers than any of our previous shows.
Our disappearance into the cultural black hole of Viresi had been covered by several network news channels.
To the news cycle, and its millions of followers, we were missing persons. Speculation that we had been killed or thrown into some dungeon never to be seen again had gone viral.
Intergalactic Food Porn had gone from a reasonably popular cooking show to an intergalactic mystery.
Our original fans and the prurient news hounds whose curiosity was piqued by our failure to deliver a show—or communicate at all since dropping onto this planet—watched it when it aired. And then they talked about it. The sex, chains, oppression, and the revolution we had participated in were shown on every network, reposted on every social network, even in remote parts of the verse.
People watched. Then they watched again. Then they invited intimate friends over to watch with them. They told their friends to watch. They told their social networks to watch.
A week after the show aired, we were getting messages from producers all over the galaxy.
We had made it. Intergalactic Food Porn was a household name.
I was a huge star.
I didn’t watch the show until it aired. Gunn could not focus on work if I walked into the editing room. And we had a deadline. So, the entire verse had seen more of what I’d endured than I had.
So, when Gunn told me how many viewers we had, I locked the door to my private spa and cued it up.

It opened with me being dragged, in chains, through a marketplace.
I’d been angry, hot, and uncomfortable in the heavy gravity of the atmosphere. My hair whipped into my face. A leather collar around my neck pulled me into the crowd, which opened to look at me, to grab at me.
It was frightening to watch. The camera, hidden on Gunn’s body, gave it a shaky, handheld movement that added to the feeling of chaos. I looked scared but also defiant. That defiance looked dangerous in those surroundings. I hadn’t seen it then. But I could see it now.
Then a Viresi woman—naked and chained—was auctioned to the crowd.
Gunn caught the contrast of her large reptilian body to my small, human one in a perfect shot as she was dragged past me.
I had hair in my mouth, unable to reach it with my own hands. Someone yanked my leash and forced me to walk past the just-sold slave.
There were scenes of Gunn plotting with the rebels—some of those were angry Viresi women, speaking Viresi with subtitles—and talking about the years of oppression and of preparations to break free of the tyranny.
In those, I could often be seen in the background, chained up.
A vignette explained the sensation of overwhelming cute aggression I caused in most of the Viresi. A crowd of women surrounded me, petting me, touching me, stroking me. My hands were chained so I couldn’t defend myself. I turned my face away, afraid to provoke anyone.
Knowing that made the scene where I was chained to a serving tray and fed to a room full of warriors even more frightening.
Gunn had edited it carefully so that you could see what was happening to me without seeing my open legs or naked body.
I struggled in the restraints. I was evidently drugged. I couldn’t close my legs or lower my arms. There were—I could see in the show but had been unable to see then—seven large Viresi men with free access to every part of me.
It was insanely sexy but also quite frightening. Watching that scene, I was afraid we would run into problems with the censors.
But Gunn focused the voice-over narration on the tradition. A woman is steeped in this intoxicant and served as an appetizer to an orgy. He explains that no one was allowed to have intercourse with me, that the scene was staged to demonstrate this tradition, and that I had not been harmed.
The ritual is an ancient Viresi tradition that predates the oppressive regime. At one time, women considered it a pleasure to be the appetizer—when they had a say in those things. Later, it became more of a sacrifice. The host would offer up a woman from his harem for an event.
A good ten minutes of the show were devoted to the metalworks where Usta put a permanent collar on me.
Gunn had filmed how the collar was made, the elaborate electronics inside, and the punishment feature that makes it easy to control the woman who wears it.
Then I am shown, chained to the ceiling so tightly I can’t move or even see what is happening, as I am forced to look up.
The bisected collar is shown to the camera in detail. The smooth ends of each half, the narrator explains, are so polished that when they touch together, they form an unbreakable bond. The metal, the narration explains, is infused with stone, rendering it uncuttable with any tools normally used to cut metal. Once installed, it cannot be removed, except with a tool that exists only in Usta’s factory—designed for the purpose.
Then the collar is installed onto my neck, obviously against my will. I am angry and struggling, though I can’t move at all.
In the next scene, Gunn uses the remote—we see only his Viresi hand on it—to inflict pain on me. I writhe and cry out, clutching the collar and the metal on my body.
The narrator explains that metal transfers and amplifies the pain and makes it travel around the body. It is one reason women are made to wear so much metal.
I can see, on screen, that this is where the fight went out of me. I am docile after that, always scanning to see if I am obeying.
